Web3 & Blockchain Terminology

Technical definitions and explanations of key concepts in blockchain development, Solana infrastructure, and enterprise Web3 engineering.

Non-Custodial

Software architecture where users maintain complete control over their private keys and assets. No third party holds custody or can access user funds. Critical for regulatory compliance under MiCAR.

Slot (Solana)

A fixed time interval (~400ms) in the Solana blockchain where a designated leader validator produces blocks. Understanding slot timing is essential for low-latency trading systems.

Validator

A node in the Solana network that participates in consensus by voting on blocks. Validators stake SOL and earn rewards for securing the network.

Low-Latency

Systems designed to minimize time delays between input and output. In blockchain trading, sub-millisecond (<1ms) or even sub-100 microsecond latency can be critical for execution.

MiCAR (Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation)

EU regulatory framework for crypto assets that came into effect 2024. Defines requirements for crypto service providers, including custody, transparency, and consumer protection.

Deterministic Systems

Computing systems that produce identical outputs for identical inputs every time. Essential for reliable low-latency trading engines and reproducible behavior.

On-Chain Analytics

Analysis of data directly from blockchain ledgers. Includes transaction patterns, validator performance, network health metrics, and user behavior.

Rust

Systems programming language known for memory safety and performance. Solana's runtime and many high-performance blockchain applications are built in Rust.

RPC (Remote Procedure Call)

Protocol that allows programs to request services from another computer on a network. In Solana, RPC nodes provide API access to blockchain data.

Innovation City (UAE)

Innovation-focused economic zone in the United Arab Emirates with dedicated frameworks for digital assets, new market infrastructures and technology-driven businesses.

TVTG (Token and TT Service Provider Act)

Liechtenstein's blockchain law providing legal certainty for token-based business models. One of the most progressive crypto regulations globally.

Smart Contract

Self-executing programs deployed on blockchain networks. On Solana, smart contracts (programs) are typically written in Rust and compiled to BPF bytecode.
